Over the past 30+ years, I've had the privilege of leading and learning alongside some of the brightest minds in Information Technology Professional Services and Digital Products. My career has spanned small startups to major enterprises across both public and private sectors. This diverse experience has not only enriched my understanding of the nuances of technology delivery, innovation and human behaviour but also underscored the critical role of leadership in harnessing technological advances to drive business success.
Having witnessed many industry evolutions, I've noticed a consistent pattern: projects and organizations rarely fail because of technical issues. Instead, the root causes are often ineffective leadership and a pervasive bystander mentality. This insight was crystallized by observing Price’s Law in action, revealing that despite the efforts of many, only a few contribute significantly—leaving vast potential untapped and many feeling unfulfilled.
Like many tech professionals, my initial ascent into leadership was based more on technical proficiency than on actual leadership skills. I too experienced the pitfalls of being thrust into managerial roles without proper training, mimicking the less effective leaders of my past. Recognizing this, I embarked on a transformative 20+ year journey, learning to cultivate leadership qualities that foster healthy, productive, and innovative organizational cultures.
As I enter the next phase of my professional life, I feel a profound responsibility to pass on the lessons I've learned.
